Solidarity with Refugees – A Call to Action

Yesterday, we gathered to commemorate World Refugee Day 2024, a day dedicated to showing our unwavering solidarity with refugees around the globe. Although the official day was six days ago, we decided to observe it yesterday due to a tight schedule. This year’s theme, ‘Solidarity with Refugees,’ reminds us of our collective responsibility to support and stand with those forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, and unimaginable hardships.

Refugees For Prosperity (RFP) is an organization Established and led by a refugee for refugees. Our unique perspective and deep understanding of cultural backgrounds, experiences, and needs drive our commitment to providing culturally sensitive and relevant support to refugees and asylum seekers in Uganda.

At RFP, our mission is clear: to welcome newcomers and empower them to become self-sufficient through direct service and educational programs. We offer immediate support to meet basic needs, technical skills training, and educational opportunities that foster independence and economic resilience. Our activities span from creating a supportive environment for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees to ensuring the safety and well-being of refugee children, providing essential legal support, and assisting refugees in starting businesses.

As we reflect on the theme of solidarity, let us remember that refugee-founded and led organizations, like RFP, play a crucial role in fostering empowerment, community building, and advocacy within refugee communities. Being a refugee-led organization, we have a stronger trust and rapport within these communities. Refugees often feel more comfortable seeking help and support from individuals who have shared similar experiences and challenges.

Solidarity is not just about standing with refugees but also about walking alongside them, listening to their stories, understanding their struggles, and working together to create solutions. It means recognizing their potential and contributions to our societies. It means advocating for their rights and ensuring they have access to opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

On this World Refugee Day, we call upon governments, organizations, and individuals to renew their commitment to supporting refugees. Let us strengthen our partnerships and collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by refugees in Uganda and beyond. Together, we can create inclusive communities where refugees are welcomed and empowered to thrive.

Let us reaffirm our solidarity with refugees not just in words but in actions. Let us build bridges of understanding and compassion. Let us stand united in our efforts to ensure that every refugee finds a place where they can call home, where they can live in safety and with dignity.
